About this tool

Rocket Mortgage services a lot of loans, and whether yours can be recast comes down to the loan type and investor behind it. Start with the math: enter your balance, rate and lump sum to see the payment you'd land on, then confirm availability with Rocket.

Availability depends on your loan

Can you recast a Rocket Mortgage?

Recasting isn't a universal feature — it's offered at the servicer's discretion and shaped by the investor who owns the loan. Some conventional loans qualify; government-backed loans (FHA, VA, USDA) generally don't. Rather than assume, use the estimate above to decide whether a recast is even worth pursuing, then ask Rocket the four questions that settle it.

  1. Is my loan eligible to recast? This is the gate — ask it first.
  2. What's the minimum principal reduction and the fee? These set your commitment and break-even.
  3. What's the order of operations? Confirm whether the payment posts before the request.
  4. When will the lower payment appear? Usually a billing cycle or two out.

No recast? Your cash still works

If your Rocket loan can't be recast, applying the lump sum to principal remains a strong move: it shortens the loan and cuts interest, and you keep your rate. The difference is that the required payment stays the same — you simply finish sooner. The calculator's comparison shows exactly how much interest that path saves versus a recast, and how the same money would grow if invested instead.

If your loan qualifies

What to have ready before you call Rocket

Because Rocket services loans for a range of investors, the quickest route to a straight answer is to come prepared. Keep your loan number, current balance, and interest rate in front of you, plus the exact lump sum you intend to apply. Then work a short list.

  1. Confirm the loan is eligible to recast — the gate, and the answer hinges on your loan type and investor.
  2. Get the minimum principal reduction and the recast fee, in writing.
  3. Clarify sequence: whether the principal payment must post before you submit the request.
  4. Ask which statement will show the new payment, so you know when to verify.

Run your figures in the calculator first so you can anchor the conversation on a concrete target — "I plan to apply X and expect the payment to fall to about Y" — rather than an open-ended question. Agents move faster when you're specific.

If Rocket can't recast your loan

Government-backed loans generally can't be recast, and some investors don't allow it. If that's your case, applying the lump sum to principal still shortens the loan and cuts interest — you keep the same payment and simply finish sooner. The comparison table puts numbers on that alternative next to the recast.

Rocket Mortgage recast FAQ

Rocket recast questions

How long does a Rocket recast take?

Where offered, typically one to two billing cycles after your principal payment posts and the request is processed. Confirm the timing with Rocket and watch your next statement.

Can I recast a Rocket loan more than once?

Some servicers allow multiple recasts, occasionally with a minimum interval or a lifetime cap. Ask Rocket about their specific policy if you expect future lump sums.

Is there a credit check to recast?

No. Recasting requires no credit pull, no appraisal, and no re-qualification — a key advantage over refinancing.

Does Rocket Mortgage offer recasting?

It depends on your loan type and the investor. Some conventional loans can be recast; FHA, VA and USDA loans generally cannot. Confirm your specific loan with Rocket.

What does a Rocket recast cost?

Where offered, typically a small flat fee. Get the exact amount and payment method from Rocket.

Will my Rocket rate change?

No. Recasting preserves your interest rate and maturity date and only lowers the monthly principal-and-interest payment.

What if my loan isn't eligible?

Pay the lump toward principal anyway to shorten the loan and save interest — the payment stays the same but you pay it off sooner.
